Five Batten MPP students won the University-wide 2013 Entrepreneurship Cup, receiving $20,000 in seed money for their nonprofit which distributes washable, reusable sanitary pads in Africa. For women at the bottom of the global income pyramid, disposable sanitary products are too costly to use regularly, and the issue forces women to regularly miss school and work.
Batten students collaborated with other University students to develop a campaign to raise federal debt awareness. The UVa team won first place in a national competition sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative University and Net Impact.
Engaged scholars, students juggle a remarkable array of academic and extra-curricular endeavors. The Batten Council annually hosts a major speaker, along with service and social events, and other student organizations emerge each year based on the interests and passions of our student body.
Before classes start each year, Batten students, faculty, and staff join together in a Day of Service in the local community. In 2013, students cleaned up the Rivanna River, built gardens for the City Schoolyard Garden initiative, and worked on home construction with the Albemarle Housing Improvement Project (AHIP)
