The Center for Leadership Simulation and Gaming (CLSG) creates experiential learning tools that provide a link between classroom learning and real-world application. Our simulations offer a chance for students to apply knowledge and know-how from multiple disciplines to unstructured, dynamic problems. As team-based exercises, our simulations also present a chance to build communication, decision-making, and leadership skills.

The Center for Leadership Simulation and Gaming at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy:

  • Designs, develops and implements cutting-edge simulations and experiments to advance education in leadership and public policy
  • Conducts rigorous leadership and public policy research using simulations and experiments
  • Creates a community of scholarship where faculty, researchers and students are supported in their scholarly efforts related to the methodology of simulations and experiments

Simulation Emphases

  • Leadership: Simulations that focus on studying human behaviors, emphasizing fields taught by our leadership curriculum
  • Analytics: Simulations that focus on policy analysis, emphasizing fields taught by our public policy curriculum
  • Strategy: Simulations that combine the study of human behaviors with policy analysis, emphasizing the fields taught by our public policy or leadership curriculum

Areas of Engagement

  • Student Education: Developing Batten-wide simulation events; classroom simulations; involving students in simulation development
  • Faculty Research: Supporting Batten and Center-affiliated faculty research (e.g. provide support in simulations, admin, programming, grants, subjects); co-authoring research projects with Batten and Center-affiliated faculty; Center’s independent research
  • Outside Batten / UVA Engagements: Sponsoring research; external educational engagements
