Batten Life

We’re small by design and uncompromising on purpose. At the Batten School, you become a part of a tight-knit community committed to excellence.

Twenty-five percent of our curriculum is practical application experience. Internships, a core requirement of the MPP degree, send students all over the world in a variety of policy fields and employment sectors. The Leadership Simulation and Gaming Center, among others, provide students the opportunities to hone their skills in leadership, negotiation, persuasion, decision-making and teamwork. We bring in top policymakers and leaders as speakers to challenge and inspire traditional thinking.

The Batten School is committed to a culture where diversity—including diversity in race, ethnicity, color, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, veteran status, physical and mental abilities, political philosophy, and socioeconomic status—is viewed as a moral responsibility and strategic imperative. Read our Diversity Plan to learn more.

It’s a rigorous academic program with a rigorous extra-curricular program to match. As part of the MPP curriculum, you work as a consultant on projects for governments, non-profits and other organizations. Student self-governance, one of the core values of the University of Virginia, is at the heart of the Batten School student experience. Students have organized to form policy clubs and consulting groups and more, honing essential leadership skills.

Charlottesville, UVA’s home and a thriving community of artists, academics and entrepreneurs, is two hours south of Washington, DC, and a 30 minute drive the Blue Ridge Mountains. Enjoy a host of farm-to-table restaurants, a music scene that welcomes local and national acts, and an award-winning local wine-and-brewery trail.
